There Is No Timetable for Grief: 16 Years Without My Mam

Grief doesn't follow a calendar and sometimes it catches you completely off guard.

This week marked 16 years since my mam went to spirit.

          Sixteen years

          .

And if there's one thing I've learned, both personally and through many years of supporting people through bereavement, it's that grief does not work to a timetable. It doesn't look at the calendar and say, Well, it's been 16 years now. You should be grand.

Life moves forward. We laugh again. We build lives. Families grow. There are birthdays, holidays, grandchildren, ordinary Thursdays, cups of tea, arguments about nothing and all the normal bits of living.

And then sometimes, completely out of nowhere, grief taps you on the shoulder and says,

          I'm still here.

When grief catches you by surprise

On the morning of my mam's anniversary, it didn't gently tap me on the shoulder. It floored me. I sobbed from the pit of my stomach. I found myself cradling myself like a baby, calling out, "Mam, I really miss you." And I did. I really, really missed her.

Now, I want to say something important here, particularly for anyone who is in the early days of grief and reading this thinking:

Oh God... am I still going to feel like this in 16 years?

No. That's not what I'm saying at all. I don't walk around every day feeling the way I felt that morning. My life has grown around my grief. I laugh. I love. I work. I have my family and my grandchildren. I have a full life. And I also have a very different relationship with my mam now. I talk to her. I feel her around me. I ask her for guidance. I notice the little signs and moments that remind me of her. I genuinely believe that our relationship didn't end when her physical life ended. But none of that means I don't sometimes desperately miss having my mam here physically. And this week, I did.

So I asked her for a sign

The following day, my dad and I went to the graveyard. I don't personally believe that my mam is in the grave. But going there is still a way of honouring her. We brought her fresh flowers, because she loved flowers, and we spent some time there together.

Before we left, I kissed her photograph on the headstone and said:

          "

Mam, send me a sign that you're with me today."

We got back into the car. And this is where it gets good. The radio came on. The first song?

I've Had the Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing.

Now, anyone who knew my mam would understand why this made me smile. That woman could watch Dirty Dancing on repeat until she'd nearly wreck your head with it.

Okay, Mam. I'm listening. Then the next song came on - Roy Orbison, "Crying". At this stage I started laughing. Because after the morning I'd had the previous day crying for her, I could nearly hear her: "

Would you stop with the crying!"

And then another song came on straight afterwards by Gilbert O Sullivan whom she loved. Three songs, one after another, and by now my dad and I were laughing.

          Was it coincidence?

Some people will absolutely say it was. That's okay. I didn't experience it that way. For me, in that moment, after asking my mam for a sign, it felt like her humour. It felt familiar. It felt like connection. And suddenly two days that had begun with me sobbing and longing for her had another emotion sitting alongside the sadness.

          Joy.

Grief and joy can sit beside each other

I think this is something we don't talk about enough. Grief isn't always one thing. You can cry because you miss somebody and ten minutes later laugh at a memory of them. You can have rebuilt your life and still have a day when the loss feels incredibly close. You can feel grateful for everything you have now and still wish, with every part of you, that one particular person could be sitting at the kitchen table with you.

One doesn't cancel out the other. And having a difficult day years after someone has died does not mean you've gone backwards. It doesn't erase all the healing, living, growing and adjusting you've done.

          Sometimes it simply means:

I love you. And today, I really miss you.

Continuing the relationship after someone dies

For many years, grief was often spoken about in terms of "letting go" or "moving on." I've never particularly liked either phrase.

We don't have to erase someone from our lives in order to continue living.

Our relationship with them can change.

You might talk to them while you're driving.

You might play their favourite music.

Cook something they used to make.

           Visit somewhere you went together.

           Keep a photograph nearby.

Tell your children or grandchildren their stories.

           Light a candle.

Pour yourself a cup of tea and pour one for them too.

Or simply sit quietly and say: "

Come and sit with me for a little while."

You don't have to force a sign. You don't have to convince yourself you've felt something when you haven't.

Just allow the connection to have space.

Sometimes it may come through a song.

           Sometimes a memory.

Sometimes a dream, a familiar smell, a sudden thought or that inexplicable feeling that someone you love is close.

And sometimes... nothing dramatic happens at all.

You simply spend ten minutes remembering someone you love. That matters too.

          Love doesn't disappear

Sixteen years later, I understand my mam differently. I understand myself differently too. There are things I wish we'd spoken about. Things I understand now that I couldn't have understood then. And there are still moments when I would give anything to physically sit beside her again. But I no longer believe that death ended our relationship. It changed it. And perhaps that's one of the gentler things we can allow ourselves to discover in grief. We don't have to choose between continuing to live our own life and continuing to love someone who has died.

          There is room for both.

And sometimes, rather than waiting for a sign or hoping to suddenly feel them around you, you can deliberately make space for that connection. I often encourage people to actually make an appointment with their loved one. Choose a time. Honour it in the same way you would if you were meeting someone you love. Put the kettle on. Pull out a chair. Pour the cup of tea they loved, or the glass of wine or whiskey they would have chosen, and invite them to sit with you.

           Talk to them.

Tell them what's happening in your life.

            Tell them you miss them.

Ask the questions you wish you could still ask.

You might cry. You might laugh. You might feel their presence around you. You might notice something afterwards that feels significant. Or you might simply sit there feeling a little bit foolish talking to an empty chair, and that's okay too. The point isn't to make something happen. It's to make space for the relationship that still matters to you.

So if you're missing somebody today, whether they died last month, last year or many years ago, don't judge yourself for it.

           Make the cup of tea.

           Play the song.

           Say their name.

Tell the story you've told a hundred times before.

Laugh at the thing they used to do that drove you absolutely mad.

And if you want to, ask them for a little sign.

hen go about your day with an open heart. You never know what might come on the radio.

          A little reminder from me

There is no timetable for love, and there is no timetable for grief. Be gentle with yourself on the days when the longing feels particularly strong. Missing someone doesn't mean you're going backwards. Sometimes it simply means that love is still very much part of your life.

          Karen xx

How to Know When Your Angels Are Trying to Get Your Attention

Have you ever asked your angels for a sign and then wondered if the very thing that happened afterwards was actually a sign at all?

           Maybe you found a feather.

A certain song came on the radio.

You kept seeing the same number.

Someone said something that was exactly what you needed to hear.

Or perhaps you just had a feeling — a little inner knowing that you couldn’t quite explain.

And then, two minutes later, the mind kicks in.

           Was that really a sign?

           Am I imagining it?

Maybe that was just a coincidence.

I think this is one of the biggest things that gets in the way when we begin connecting with our angels. We expect the signs to be huge. We expect something so obvious that there could be absolutely no doubt. But very often, that isn’t how it happens.

Angel signs can be incredibly subtle

Our angels are communicating with us far more often than we realise. The problem is that most of us are so busy getting through our day that we simply don't notice. We’re thinking about what needs to be done, where we need to be next, what happened yesterday, what might happen tomorrow. And in amongst all that noise, there can be these little moments trying to catch our attention.

           A feather appearing somewhere unusual.

           A robin coming very close.

A particular number following you everywhere.

A song that immediately makes you think of someone.

A conversation you happen to overhear.

The same message appearing several times in completely different places.

Or something you suddenly feel very strongly drawn towards.

It doesn't always have to be dramatic. Sometimes it can be the smallest thing. But there is something about it that makes you

          notice

          . And that is important.

Pay attention to what was happening just before the sign

This is something I always encourage people to do. Rather than immediately asking:

          “What does this feather mean?”

           or

          “What does 444 mean?”

          go back a little.

What were you thinking about when you noticed it?

           What were you asking for?

           Was something worrying you?

Had you just been thinking about a loved one?

Were you trying to make a decision?

Had you asked your angels for help or reassurance?

Because very often the meaning isn't simply in the sign itself. The meaning is in

what was happening for you when the sign appeared.

Two people can see exactly the same thing and it can mean something completely different to each of them.

That's why your own relationship with your angels matters much more than memorising lists of what every number, feather or symbol is supposed to mean.

Sometimes the same thing keeps appearing

One of the ways something really gets my attention is repetition. You might notice something once and think nothing of it.

Then it happens again. And again.

          Suddenly you're thinking: Okay… I’m listening.

           It might be a word.

           A person's name.

           A particular animal.

           A number.

           A book somebody mentions.

           A place.

           A piece of advice.

Sometimes it is even the same message coming to you through completely different people.

That doesn't necessarily mean every repeated thing is an angelic message. But when something keeps catching your attention, it is worth becoming curious about it.

          Ask yourself: "

Why am I noticing this right now"?

Signs can come through other people too

Angel guidance doesn't always arrive in the way we expect. You may have been asking for guidance about something and then meet somebody who says exactly the words you needed to hear. They might have absolutely no idea what you've been thinking about. And yet something in what they say lands differently.

            Sometimes somebody recommends a book.

            Or sends you a message.

Or mentions something completely out of the blue.

I don't think we need to analyse every conversation we have looking for hidden messages. But there are times when something lands so strongly that you just know you need to pay attention.

That quiet inner knowing matters too

One of the most important ways we receive guidance is through our intuition. And this can actually be more difficult to trust than seeing a feather or a number because there is nothing outside of us to “prove” it.

           It's simply a feeling.

           A knowing.

           Something feels right.

           Or something doesn't.

You might suddenly feel drawn to call someone.

           Take a different route.

           Look something up.

           Say yes to something.

           Or say no.

And often our first instinct is very clear. It is what comes afterwards that complicates things.

           We start questioning.

           Analysing.

           Doubting ourselves.

Trying to work out whether we made the whole thing up.

Learning to connect with your angels is also about learning to trust yourself. And like anything else, that trust develops over time.

You don't have to constantly ask for signs

This is another thing I think is important. Sometimes we can get into a cycle of asking: “Give me a sign.”

Then the sign comes. And we say: “Okay, give me another one so I know that one was real.”

Then another one comes. And we're still not sure. At some point, connecting with your angels becomes less about asking them to prove that they are there and more about developing a relationship with them.

           Talk to them.

           Invite them into your day.

           Ask for guidance.

           Sit quietly.

           Notice what you feel.

           Notice what keeps showing up.

And most importantly, begin trusting the connection that is developing.

           You don't need fireworks.

You don't need an angel to appear at the bottom of your bed.

And you don't have to be psychic or have some extraordinary spiritual gift.

Sometimes it begins simply by becoming a little more aware.

Try this for the next few days

Before you begin your day, take a moment.

          I

t doesn't have to be a big meditation or ritual. Close your eyes, place your hand on your heart, take a breath in and simply say something like:

“Angels, walk with me today. Help me to notice your guidance and trust what I receive.”

And then get on with your day with the intention of trusting that the Angels are walking with you, guiding, loving and supporting you. Don't go looking desperately for signs. Just be open. Notice what catches your attention. Notice the things that repeat. Notice the conversations that seem to arrive at exactly the right moment. Notice how things feel in your body. And if something does stand out, write it down. Over time, you may begin to see patterns that you couldn't see before. Because very often, the connection was there all along. We were simply too busy, or too doubtful, to trust and notice it.

Your relationship with your angels is personal, it is unique just like your fingerprint so allow it to become yours.

When A Book Becomes Music: The Unexpected Journey of Walk With Angels

When I first sat down to write Walk with Angels, I had one simple hope. I hoped it would help people feel a little more connected to themselves, to their intuition, and to the angels who quietly walk beside them every day. I wanted it to be a gentle companion. A book that would help people pause, breathe and remember that they're never truly walking through life alone. Never, not even for a second, did I imagine it would inspire someone else to write music. Yet that's exactly what happened.

It all started with one simple idea

Walk with Angels is a 30-day guided journey designed to help people build their own relationship with the angels. The first week is all about meeting your Guardian Angel and learning that everyone has one. From there, the journey explores how angels communicate with us, the signs they send, how to recognise their guidance, and the different Archangels who support us throughout life's challenges. More than anything, I wanted people to experience the angels for themselves rather than simply read about them.

Earlier this year, my friend Carol Maher read Walk With Angels. Before picking up the book, connecting with angels wasn't something she'd ever really explored. As she journeyed through the four stages, something began to shift. When I later asked Carol what inspired her to write the songs, this was her reply:

"Because this book has been so powerful for me, I wanted to find a way that would be easy for me to stay connected with the Angels on a daily basis, and continue to enjoy the comfort, peace, love, joy and inner strength that connecting with the Angels has brought. I was inspired to write four songs to remind me of all the Angels and the four sections in this book while including some of the key learnings along the way."

Reading those words alone meant so much. Then she went and did exactly what she'd described. She wrote four original songs. One for each stage of the Walk with Angels journey.

The moment I first heard them

The first time I listened to the songs wasn't at home. I was on holiday in Tenerife with my husband and friends. We were sitting by the sea, cocktails in hand, enjoying the sunshine, the conversations and everything that comes with slowing down for a few days. Then my phone buzzed. Carol had sent me a WhatsApp message. The songs were finished. Of course I pressed play straight away. But with the sound of the waves, people chatting around us and music playing nearby, I couldn't really hear them. So I stopped. The strange thing was that, although I was having a lovely afternoon, all I wanted to do was get back to the hotel room. I had this nervous excitement inside me. I couldn't wait to hear what she'd created.

As soon as we got back, I went straight to the bedroom. I put my headphones on, lay across the bed and pressed play. I wanted to experience them quietly, just me and the music, before hearing anyone else's thoughts or opinions. Within seconds, I was crying.

Then came the words about the butterfly. If you've followed my work for a while, you'll know how much that means to me.

Before my mum died, the blue butterfly became the sign she promised she would send me from spirit. Since then, it has become such an important part of my life that it's now the logo for my work. To hear Carol weave a butterfly into that very first song completely took me by surprise. It felt like someone had wrapped my heart in the biggest hug. I didn't just have a few tears. I sobbed.

As the songs continued, it wasn't only the lyrics that moved me. It was the way Carol had somehow captured the essence of the angels. Each song reflects one of the four stages of Walk with Angels, weaving together the Guardian Angel, the Archangels, their colours, their qualities and the messages woven throughout the journey. I've spent years trying to describe what the angels feel like. Through readings, healing sessions, workshops and finally through writing Walk with Angels, I've searched for words that might help people understand their presence. Then Carol wrote these songs.

Somehow, Carol captured their essence in a way my own words never could. That is an incredible gift.

          A soundtrack to the journey

For the rest of the holiday, my headphones were never far away. Song 3, Coming Home to Me quickly became my Tenerife soundtrack. It's centred around Archangel Michael, who has always held such a special place in my own life, and every time I listened to it, I felt elevated and connected to myself more. Since the album was released on Spotify this week, the songs have been on repeat. In the car. Around the house. Even in my head.

And something unexpected has happened. Even though I've worked with the angels for many years, these songs have deepened my own connection with them. I've found myself spending time with Archangels I wouldn't naturally connect with every day, simply because the music invites me to pause and spend time with them. I honestly never imagined music could become another way of connecting with the angels. Yet that's exactly what it's become.

          More than a book

One of the biggest lessons this experience has taught me is that we never really know where something we create will lead. When I wrote Walk with Angels, I thought I was writing a book. I never imagined it would become something people could read, listen to and experience. For that, I'll always be grateful to Carol.

Her gift for songwriting has brought the journey to life in a way I could never have imagined, and I'm so honoured that the message of the angels is now reaching people through music as well as words.

I'd genuinely love to know which song speaks to you the most. Mine keeps changing. Each time I listen, a different lyric seems to arrive exactly when I need it. Perhaps that's the beautiful thing about music. It has a way of meeting us exactly where we are and touching our heart.

That was the moment we both received her promise. Not long after, I got a blue

Her Birthday Signs, and the Butterfly Who Returned

This year, on her birthday, our family visited her graveside. I know she’s not there

in spirit, but honouring the day felt important.

The signs began early. My daughter opened a box of doughnuts she’d been

gifted, on two of them were delicate blue butterfly decorations.

At the graveside, as I told my little grandson Khylin stories about his Great Nanny,

a tiny blue butterfly hovered around us.

Later, while sharing the earlier signs with family, the same butterfly circled us

          once more.

That evening, my daughter found a white feather in her garden, another sign

from both the angels and our loved ones in Spirit. It felt like Mam was wrapping

us in love the entire day.

          Why I Chose the Feather

Feathers have always been a powerful sign from Spirit for me, but they’re also

deeply connected to the angels who have guided my entire life and spiritual

work. Archangel Michael, especially, has been a constant companion. I wanted

the feather in my logo to honour that connection, a symbol of protection,

guidance, and the angelic presence that surrounds us.

Stepping Into My True Identity: Why My Brand Is Now “I Am Karen Walsh”

When I began this journey, I thought I needed a spiritual business name,

something that described what I did. But as I grew, healed, and stepped more

fully into my gifts, I realised something important:

I’m not hiding behind a brand anymore.

           I am the work.

           I am the channel.

           I am the connection.

My work is about guiding people to reconnect with their own soul, their own light,

their own power, and their own inner wisdom. And to teach that authentically, I

had to walk the same path myself.

           I had to stop shrinking.

           Stop hiding my gifts.

Stop standing behind names that were “safe.”

           Stop waiting for permission.

So I stepped forward into the identity that feels truest:

           I Am Karen Walsh.

A woman who walks with Spirit.

           A healer.

           A channel.

           A medium.

           A guide.

A soul who helps others reconnect with themselves.

The blue butterfly and feather don’t represent a company, they represent my

journey, my mam, my angels, and the work I am here to do.

Our loved ones are always sending us signs, butterflies, feathers, songs,

If you’re missing someone today, take a moment to ask for a sign. Be open,

gentle, and trusting. Signs come in divine timing, always when your heart is ready.

Your guardian angels stand with you too, but because we have free will, they can

only intervene when invited. A simple intention whispered from the heart is

How Loved Ones Send Us Signs After They Die

A gentle guide to recognising the subtle ways Spirit reaches out to us.

When someone we love dies, the world changes. The physical connection is gone, but the love remains, and that love continues in ways that are often quiet, gentle, and deeply personal. Even when the grief feels heavy, our loved ones in Spirit are closer than we realise.

They reach out to us in small, meaningful ways, offering comfort, reassurance, and reminders that they’re still with us, only in a different form.

In this blog, I want to share some of the most common ways our loved ones send signs after they die, and how you can begin recognising them in your own life.

Nature is one of the easiest ways for Spirit to make contact because it flows freely, gently, and without fear.

          Many people notice:

          Butterflies appearing at meaningful moments

          Birds visiting windows or gardens

          Feathers in unusual places

          Dragonflies, robins, ladybirds

Sudden stillness, soft wind, shiver through your body when indoors and warm.

A deep knowing that they are with you

These signs often arrive when you’re thinking about your loved one, or when your heart needs reassurance the most. Butterflies, especially, are powerful messengers. For some, they represent transformation. For others, like me, they carry deep personal meaning.

2. Music, Songs & Lyrics

Spirit often uses music because it goes straight to the heart.

          You might notice:

A song that was meaningful to your loved one suddenly playing

A lyric that speaks directly to your situation

A tune that comes into your mind out of nowhere

Music is one of the easiest ways for them to reach you, especially when you’re driving, resting, or in moments of quiet reflection.

3. Clouds, Shapes & Light

Some signs are visual, subtle, and deeply beautiful:

Cloud shapes resembling hearts, angels, feathers, animals

          Rainbows appearing unexpectedly

Sunlight streaming in at a meaningful moment

Flickering lights or gentle electrical disturbances

These signs often appear around anniversaries, birthdays, or on days when you’re missing them deeply.

4. Thoughts, Feelings & Inner Whispers

          Not all signs are external.

          Some signs come as:

          A sudden memory

          A feeling of warmth

          A sense of their presence

A phrase or sentence that drops into your mind

A moment of peace that feels “not your own”

Your loved ones use your intuition because it’s one of the easiest channels for them to reach.

5. Dreams & Visitations

Dreams are a powerful form of spiritual communication.

          A true visitation dream feels:

Peaceful

          Vivid

          Comforting

          Real

          Emotionally soothing

Your loved one may appear healthy, glowing, or much younger, often exactly the way you remember them at their happiest.

These dreams are not “just dreams.” They are visits. Trust and know this.

6. Objects Moving, Smells & Little Moments

          Some signs show up as:

Their scent suddenly filling a room

          A photo falling

          A candle flickering

          Coins appearing

Meaningful objects showing up in unexpected places

These are subtle ways Spirit says:

          “I’m still here. I haven’t left you.”

Why These Signs Arrive.

Signs are not random. They come because:

          Love doesn’t end

          Spirit continues

          Your bond remains

The connection changes form but not essence

They want you to know you’re not alone

They love you and want to comfort you

And the most important part:

Signs come when your heart is ready to receive them.

          Not a moment earlier.

          Not a moment too late.

How to Become More Open to Signs

You don’t need to do anything special. Simply soften.

Here are some gentle ways to invite signs:

Speak to your loved one as if they are sitting right bed=side you because they will be name

          Think of them

          Ask for a sign

Invite them to be with you at a particular time and honour this as if going to an important appointment

          Speak their name

          Be curious, not forceful

          Trust what you feel

Signs aren’t always dramatic. Most are quiet, soft, and deeply personal meant only for you.

A Final Message

If you’re grieving someone you loved deeply, please know this:

          They have not vanished.

They have not stopped loving you.

They have not disappeared into nothingness.

          They are walking beside you.

          They hear you.

          They see your pain.

They send signs in the small moments when your heart needs it most.

And when you’re ready, you will begin to recognise them.
